Feature: Big League - Heathen Sound

Created initially from lounge-room recordings by husband & wife team Travis (guitar, vocals) & Marie Velthoven (bass), Big League endearing quartet have fast found a name for themselves at home and abroad.

A little louder, a little tighter, and with all the catchy guitar rock their new album Heathen Sound, Big League surf a wave of relatability as they explore new angles and breathe fresh life into themes of nostalgia and the challenges of navigating daily life.

As Travis explains, the album title is also "a throwback reference to a time when rock ’n’ roll was considered by some to be the biggest threat to our children’s well-being."

One of Big League's secret weapons is that the album was mixed by Beau Sorenson, the US producer and engineer with an impressive CV that includes Bob Mould, Sparklehorse, Death Cab For Cutie and Garbage.

The first single from the album was 'Dine Out On The Subdivide', described by Backseat Mafia as if "Martin Phillipps from The Chills jammed with Velvet Underground in the midst of an earthquake.

'At All’ sounded like a lost recording of Bob Mould and The Clean covering The Psychedelic Furs while 'Tea and Sandwich Committee’ embraced heavy swing, guitar crunch and distorted squeal.

On the fourth single 'Rest In Peace, Get Well Soon’ imagine Tim Rogers (You Am I) and Neil Young jamming with Dinosaur Jr!

Sonically there's an arc to Heathen Sound that encompasses the best aspects of indie and alternative rock, where big ideas cosy up to life-affirming and emotive rock music.

Through their distinctive language of distorted melodies, Big League spin tales that celebrate the often unappreciated details of suburban Australia. Their latest release Heathen Sound is available to stream now via Bellissimo Fingers Records.
